{"id":1098,"date":"2023-02-09T14:35:39","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T13:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/?p=1098"},"modified":"2023-02-09T14:35:40","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T13:35:40","slug":"how-do-women-experience-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/?p=1098","title":{"rendered":"How do women experience depression?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do women experience depression?<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depression is more common among women than among men.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biological, life cycle, hormonal and psychosocial factors unique to women may be linked to women\u2019s higher depression rate.<br>Researchers have shown that hormones directly affect brain chemistry that controls emotions and mood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, women are particularly vulnerable to depression after giving birth, when hormonal and physical changes, along with the new responsibility of caring for a newborn, can be overwhelming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many new mothers experience a brief episode of the \u201cbaby blues,\u201d but some will develop postpartum depression, a much more serious condition that requires active treatment and emotional support for the new mother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some studies suggest that women who experience postpartum depression often have had prior depressive episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-therapy-for-anxiety wp-block-embed-therapy-for-anxiety\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/what-are-anxiety-disorders\/\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/what-are-anxiety-disorders\/\">What are anxiety disorders?<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some women may also be susceptible to a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), sometimes called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\" title=\"\">,<\/a> a condition resulting from the hormonal changes<br>that typically occur around ovulation and before menstruation<br>begins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the transition into menopause, some women experience an increased risk for depression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists are exploring how the cyclical rise and fall of estrogen and other hormones may affect<br>the brain chemistry that is associated with depressive illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Finally, many women face the additional stresses of work and home responsibilities, caring for children and aging parents, abuse, poverty, and relationship strains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains unclear why some women faced with enormous challenges develop depression, while others<br>with similar challenges do not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do women experience depression?
