Many people when they come for help will say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to get better,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be alright,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be my old self again,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to live a normal life,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-therapy-for-anxiety wp-block-embed-therapy-for-anxiety\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/be-precise-about-your-fears\/\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/therapyforanxiety.org\/be-precise-about-your-fears\/\">Be precise about your fears<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>This is all perfectly understandable, but recovery doesn\u2019t come from aiming at this sort of goal. Remember, goals have to be SMART.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to get better \u2013 this is too vague. Your goal must be Specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be alright \u2013 can you define \u2018alright\u2019? \u2018Alright\u2019 isn\u2019t Measurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be my old self again \u2013 this is not Achievable, because every experience changes you, and so you will always be a different person from the one who fell into the black hole of Anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to live a normal life \u2013 is this truly Relevant? Wouldn\u2019t it be better to live the life that\u2019s right for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just want to be happy \u2013 achieving happiness isn\u2019t Timeable. It can happen in an instant<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\" title=\"\">,<\/a> or it can take years.<br>Instead you need to look for concrete, specific goals such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to get back to work,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to have a relationship,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to travel abroad,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to go back to college.<br>Use your notebook to write down specific long-term goals for you. Don\u2019t let yourself become upset at the thought of how far off they seem. Instead, use the goals as your motivator.
